Fifteen years of carpet work has taught me one thing about urine: it doesn't sit on top of carpet. It goes through it; into the pad, into the tack strip, into the seams, and often into the subfloor underneath. A cleaning treats the top layer. Everything below it stays exactly where it was, and the odor comes back the first warm, humid week of the year.
We pull the carpet back or use a UV light to evaluate the severity, replace what's contaminated, treat what can be treated, and reinstall it properly. Then clean it because cleaning alone may not resolve the issue.

This is the part most people learn the expensive way, usually after two or three cleanings.
Cleaning reaches the carpet face. Urine reaches everything under it. A cleaning wand pulls moisture from the fibers and the top of the backing. The pad below is a sponge — it holds far more urine than the carpet does, and a cleaner can't extract it. In some cases subsurface extraction can resolve a less severe urine issue.
Urine crystals reactivate with humidity. As urine dries it leaves salts behind. Those salts are odorless when dry and smell strongly when moisture hits them. That's why the house smells fine in February and smells like a kennel in July — and why it can smell worse right after a cleaning, when you've just added water to the exact spot.
The damage is bigger than the stain. A visible spot the size of a dinner plate is routinely two to three times that size in the pad, because urine spreads outward as it soaks down. Treating what you can see leaves most of it behind.
Retail enzyme products have the same problem. They work on fresh surface accidents. They don't reach pad or subfloor, and no amount of pouring more on changes that.
None of this means the carpet is ruined. It means the fix has to happen under the carpet, not on top of it.
